Instruction Writing

In Year 3, as part of our Literacy work, we have been learning how to write instructions. We all wrote instructions on how to make a sandwich. To evaluate whether our instructions were easy to understand and whether we had included each step, our partner had to follow our instructions to make our sandwich for us. This had some quite amusing results!

A Little Bit Of Baking!

Today, as part of our measuring work in Numeracy and our Instruction work in Literacy, Year 3  baked some Celtic oatcakes. We had to read the recipe and follow the instructions carefully and also measure the ingredients by reading the scale accurately. Great fun was had by everyone.

Year 4 - 'The Twits' play scripts.

 

This week we started to plan and write our own play scripts based on the book ‘The Twits’. We started the week by looking at characterisation and how the author makes good use of stage directions to tell the actor/actress what a character should behave like. We created a ‘role on the wall’ of Mr and Mrs Twit and looked at powerful vocabulary to describe them both. This then helped when beginning to write our own plays.

Launch of Coalway Broadcasting Service

Coalway Junior School took to the airwaves  as we launched our very own school radio station, CBS - Coalway Broadcasting Service.  We produced a flawless and professional programme that contained entertaining and informative news packages. The broadcasting team ensured they targeted listeners, providing relevant content and school related issues. Listeners were also able to sing along to their favourite bands, including One Direction and some Christmas classics.
This will help the children  to develop their speaking and listening skills and write for a particular purpose and audience.They are also able to develop their ICT skills, recording and editing news packages. 
It has also been a wonderful experience for the children to work with students from Lakers and the ICT Team who have helped in the launch of our exciting new initiative.

Year 4 Harvest Assembly 2013!

On Wednesday 2^nd October, Year 4 performed their Harvest assembly to the whole school and then performed it to parents and carers in the afternoon. This year our assembly was all about the history of the Harvest festival. We learnt some very interesting facts!

Year 4 did a super job of learning some very tricky lines and were fabulous when performing to the whole school.  

In our assembly we included some of the acrostic poems that we had written in R.E. Here are some examples that were read out in our assmebly:
 

H is for happiness for the food we eat,
A is for appreciation for the things we have,
R is for rain that helps the crops grow,
V is for the variety of fruit and veg,
E is for eating everything we grow,
S is for the sun that feeds our plants,
T is to say thank you for the farmers and God.

Donations of food this year were given to the Coleford Food Bank. They were very grateful to receive the food and wanted to say a special thank you to all those at Coalway who kindly donated.

 

Exploring The Forest

As part of our Literacy work on familiar settings, Year 3 explored the local forest today. To help us develop words to describe our different senses we had fun walking through squelching mud, splashing through puddles, listening to the sounds of the forest and touching things that grow. 
Whilst we walked, we also had time to pick some delicious plump blackberries which we turned into scrumptious cakes ready for the Parents' tea and cake afternoon tomorrow. We hope you enjoy them!

Hot Seating

As part of our work on the story of Little Red Riding Hood Year 3 hot seated different characters from the story. First we had a visit from Red Riding Hood and then we each took on the roles of the 5 different characters. We thought of some interesting questions to ask each of the characters and were able to explore their thoughts and feelings . We had some very talented actors!

 

Year 3 - Making Christmas Cakes

As part of our Literacy work, Year 3 followed instructions so that we could each make a Christmas cake for the Christmas Craft Fayre. It also helped us improve our weighing skills as we had to measure out all the ingredients too. All we have to do now is decorate them and then they will be a delicious present to buy at the fayre.

Year 3 - Cliffhanger

In Literacy,  to help us identify the features of Adventure stories, Year 3 have been reading the story Cliffhanger by Jacqueline Wilson. We hot seated some of the characters to help us understand how different characters feelings change throughout the story and we completed some drama to express what we thought a character might be thinking or feeling. It was great fun and Year 3 has certainly got some very talented actors!

Year 3 - Mapping out a Journey!

In Literacy, Year 3 have been looking at the features of different Myths. To help us understand the journey that different characters undertake we had fun chalking out story maps on the playground. This will help us when we write our own Myths next week.

In the Woods

Year 3 have had lots of fun walking through the woods to test their senses in order to inspire their Literacy work. We have been squelching through the mud (parents too!!), listening to the sounds and sights all around us. We had a fantastic time!

Year 6 Chocolate Creations

In preparation for our trip to Cadbury World on Wednesday 14th, class 7 have been writing about an object or place made entirely from chocolate and/or sweets. Read on for a couple of tasty examples of the creative writing we have produced.

Chocolate Smoothie Water Park – Kieran Squire
The chocolate smoothie water park is a non healthy swimming paradise. Even the water slides run with chocolate smoothie but if you’re a kid you ride with an adult gummy bear which you can eat at the end! Or if you just want to relax use one of our chocolate square relaxing floats. Terms and conditions, no fruit or vegetables and child - free entry!

My Super Sweet Home – Moiyah Jackson
Come to my mouth-watering home, entirely made from sweets and chocolate! Outside there are lolly pop trees and a pit full of marshmallows! The path to the house is made of tiny jelly bean like stones. Inside leads you to the kitchen. The taps are either hot chocolate or cool chocolate milkshake. Each room is the best place ever to me. There are pink fluffy candy-floss pillows, multi coloured huggable gummy bears and so much more! Come to my super sweet home!

Big Write!

Today we were learning how to write a set of clear instructions to make a Victoria Sponge cake. Mrs Griffiths tried to explain to Miss Allford how to make the cake. However, Mrs Griffiths was not using any imperative 'bossy' verbs! Fortunately, year 5 were on hand to help. The children thought of many imperative verbs to make a 'successful' cake! Well done Year 5.

Class 8 engaged with a 'Big Write' exercise this morning.

We walked around the school listening, feeling, smelling for the change of seasons from summer to autumn.

The children then wrote poems using some of the language we discussed and the inspiration from our walk.
