As part of our Invasion topic, Year 3 visited the Roman remains at Caerleon. We had great fun exploring the primary sources and learnt lots of new facts about the way the Romans lived their lives.
Whilst we were there, we all took part in a role play activity, pretending we were either rich Roman people having a meal or the slaves who had to serve them their feast.
We also had the opportunity to visit the replica barracks where we sat on the uncomfortable bunks which were like those that would have been slept on by Roman soldiers. Everyone was also able to try on the lorica segmentata, which was the heavy segmented metal armour worn by the Roman soldiers.
It was a brilliant day and thankfully the rain stopped and the sun shone on us all afternoon whilst we visited the amphitheater and barrack remains.

Instruction Writing
In Year 3, as part of our Literacy work, we have been learning how to write instructions. We all wrote instructions on how to make a sandwich. To evaluate whether our instructions were easy to understand and whether we had included each step, our partner had to follow our instructions to make our sandwich for us. This had some quite amusing results!

Controlling the Bee-Bots
Continuing are work with control, Year 3 had great fun programming the Bee-Bots so that they would move in a specific shape. First we used the Ipads to help us understand what we would need to include in our instructions then we had to write a program to input into the robot. This helped us to understand the importance of writing accurate, clear instructions when controlling electronic devices.

Exploring Shapes
This week, in Year 3, we have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We have carried out all kinds of investigations to help us identify the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. As part of our work on 2D shapes we also investigated the number of lines of symmetry and identified right angles. We have also created our own 3D shapes using nets and used this knowledge to try and create our own nets.

Year 3 Control
As part of our computer control work, we had great fun this week pretending that we were controlling human robots. One person provided the instruction and the human robot had to follow them exactly with some surprising results! This was to help us to understand the importance of giving precise instructions when controlling computerized equipment. Next week we will work out a set of instructions for the Bee-Bots to follow.

Learning French
Today, in Year 3, we began our first lesson of learning a new language. We had great fun learning how to say hello and goodbye to one another and how to tell somebody how we are feeling in French. We will now practise this each day as we answer the register.

Invasion Day
To begin our new theme Year 3 had an Invasion Day. We researched lots of information about the Celts to understand how they lived their lives, tried our hand at weaving and made Celtic round houses. We also completed some wonderful collages for display in our corridors and classroom.

Our Ceiling Hangers
As part of our DT work, Year 3 created dream catchers and wind chimes. We designed our own creations and decided which materials to use and how to fasten them together. To help us recognise how they could be improved further we evaluated our own work and also peer assessed each others' designs.
Woodland Walk
As part of our geography and history work Year 3 took a lovely wintery walk through the forest. This helped us to find evidence to help us identify how the forest is used today and how this has changed over time. Despite the mist obscuring our view, we still managed to identify lots of different things to support our ideas. We found evidence of coal mining, tram ways and we looked at both the old quarry and the site of the new quarry

Year 3 Visit To Coleford
As part of our geography work, studying the local area, Year 3 visited Coleford. We drew our own maps of the town centre and carried out a traffic survey of the vehicles entering Coleford. Whilst we were in town we also considered the work we have been doing in history. We made lots of comparisons between life today in the town compared to the old photographs we have been studying, and identified lots of changes that have taken place over time.
Year 3 would like to say thank you to all the parent helpers who made our visit possible.

Investigating Number Patterns
In Year 3, to help us recognise different number patterns within each of the times tables, we used the digit wheel and number lines to help us determine if there were any patterns.
We spotted lots of different patterns such as, any even number when multiplied will only give an even multiple and when an odd number is multiplied the multiples are in a pattern of even, odd, even, odd.
We also discovered different repeating patterns within each of the times tables. This will help us to consider whether our answers are sensible during our weekly Ninja Multiplication Challenge and when we are multiplying larger numbers.
