Year 3 Visit Caerleon

As part of our Invasion topic, Year 3 visited the Roman remains at Caerleon. We had great fun  exploring the  primary sources and learnt lots of new facts about the way the Romans lived their lives.
Whilst we were there, we all took part in a role play activity, pretending we were either rich Roman people having a meal or the slaves who had to serve them their feast.
We also had the opportunity to visit the replica barracks where we sat on the uncomfortable bunks which were like those that would have been slept on by Roman soldiers. Everyone was also able to try on the lorica segmentata, which was the heavy segmented metal armour worn by the Roman soldiers.
It was a brilliant day and thankfully the rain stopped and the sun shone on us all afternoon whilst we visited the amphitheater and barrack remains.

Year 4 art work

This week year 4 have been busy starting their new theme…. The Tudors! We started our theme by looking at chronology and then looked at the Tudor monarchs. We used collage materials to create portraits of the Tudor monarchs and Henry VIII’s wives.

Woodland Walk

As part of our geography and history work Year 3 took a lovely wintery walk through the forest. This helped us to find evidence to help us identify how the forest is used today and how this has changed over time. Despite the mist obscuring our view, we still managed to identify lots of different things to support our ideas.We found evidence of coal mining, tram ways and we looked at both the old quarry and the site of the new quarry

Year 3 Visit To Coleford

As part of our geography work, studying the local area, Year 3 visited Coleford. We drew our own maps of the town centre and carried out a traffic survey of the vehicles entering Coleford. Whilst we were in town we also considered the work we have been doing in history. We made lots of comparisons between life today in the town compared to the old photographs we have been studying, and identified lots of changes that have taken place over time.
Year 3 would like to say thank you to all the parent helpers who made our visit possible.

Year 3 Dean Heritage Centre

Today, we visited The Dean Heritage Centre to help us understand how the way people live their lives has changed over time.
We had lots of fun doing Ma Meek's washing in the Victorian cottage, using the wash board and wooden dolly and had a good look around her kitchen, living room and bedrooms, noticing some interesting objects along the way!

We also developed our understanding of the life of a charcoal burner in the Forest of Dean and why they cooked the wood into charcoal.

Learning about the life of a child miner was also very interesting and made us realise that school is not such hard work after all!

 

Year 3 Visit Caerleon

Today, as part of our Invasion topic, Year 3 visited the National Roman Legion Museum at Caerleon. We had a fantastic time looking at all the Roman artefacts which even included a Roman skeleton!

 We spent time in the barracks which had been recreated so that we could understand what it was like to live as soldier 2000 years ago. Everyone also tried on the lorica segmentata (Roman armour) and helmet.

To understand what school life was like for the young Roman, we visited the Roman school where we were taught Roman Numerals and latin by a very strict Roman teacher!

 

We  had great fun exploring  the Roman baths, learning that 500 Romans would bathe together at the same time! We visited the amphitheatre and the barracks. This helped us to understand how closely the Roman soldiers had to live together unlike  the Centurian in charge. We also took a look at where they sat together to go to the toilet! The amphitheartre was immense. We role played the parts of Roman gladiators and the jeering crowd. We all had a super time.

Exploring the Local Woodland

As part of our Forest Capers Theme, Year 3 had a fun time exploring the local woodland. We visited the old quarry so that we could sketch the rock face and identify the different layers. We also looked at how the forest is used today and looked for evidence to identify how it was used in the past.

Year 3 - Visiting Coleford

As part of our Forest Capers topic Year 3 visited Coleford to complete some science, geography and history work.


In history we have been looking at old phographs of Coleford town. To help us compare the past with the present day we looked around the town to identify how it has change over time.

As part of our geography work we also completed a traffic survey and thought carefully about why people might travel into town and what impact this could have on the environment.


In science we have been studying lots of different rocks so whilst we were in Coleford we looked at different buildings to see if we could identify any rocks that had been used and thought carefully about why they may have been chosen for that purpose.

Year 3 - Dean Heritage Centre

As part of our Forest Capers topic, Year 3 visited The Dean Heritage Centre to help us understand how life in the Forest of Dean has changed over the years.


We visited Ma Meek in the Victorian cottage and had a go at  washing clothes the hard way using a wash board and dolly which was a big difference from the automatic washing machines we use today!

We also learnt all about how they use to make charcoal by building a stack and we had a go at making our own.

The galleries were very interesting and we looked at different artifacts from long ago. The mining artefacts were very interesting and we even had a go at pulling one of the carts that children years ago had to pull full of coal in the mines.
