How Can We Get Plop To Sleep?

As part of our class reading book 'The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark',Year 3 have been finding out all about Plop the Owl who, much to his parent's dismay, does not sleep in the day time. As part of our science work on light we carried out investigations to determine which material would be most suitable for curtains to block out the light so that he will finally get some rest.
We made our predictions and then tested each material fairly so that we could determine which material would be most effective.

Visit to the Cotswold Wildlife Park

As part of our Africa topic, Year 4 visited the Cotswold Wildlife Park. We had a great experience talking to the zoo keepers and spotting African animals within the different enclosures.
We were extremely lucky as we had the opportunity to see the Cotswold Wildlife Park's first baby rhino. It was very cute! Another one is due any day so we are busy checking for news on their website.
This visit will help us to compare different animals and consider how they have adapted and how they cope living in different habitats.

Gardening

As part of our Good Life topic Year 3 have been busy planting seeds in our vegetable garden. We have planted potatoes, runner beans,, broad beans, tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries which, once they have grown, we hope to share with the rest of the school.
This will help us to understand how plants grow and what a plant needs in order to grow.
Lets hope we get a little more sunshine to help them on their way!

Exploring the Local Woodland

As part of our Forest Capers Theme, Year 3 had a fun time exploring the local woodland. We visited the old quarry so that we could sketch the rock face and identify the different layers. We also looked at how the forest is used today and looked for evidence to identify how it was used in the past.

Year 3 - Visiting Coleford

As part of our Forest Capers topic Year 3 visited Coleford to complete some science, geography and history work.


In history we have been looking at old phographs of Coleford town. To help us compare the past with the present day we looked around the town to identify how it has change over time.

As part of our geography work we also completed a traffic survey and thought carefully about why people might travel into town and what impact this could have on the environment.


In science we have been studying lots of different rocks so whilst we were in Coleford we looked at different buildings to see if we could identify any rocks that had been used and thought carefully about why they may have been chosen for that purpose.

Year 3 - Planting Our Seeds

As part of our new topic, The Good Life, Year 3 are learning all about what plants need to grow. To help them understand this they have planted lots of vegetable seeds in the raised beds which they will water ( if it ever stops raining!) and keep free of weeds so that they will germinate and grow into healthy plants and of course healthy vegetables to eat.

YEAR 4 TRIP

16th September

What a great day Year 4 children had at The Cotswold Wildlife Park! Although the weather forecast was not good, the rain held off until the very end of the day and so we all stayed dry.

We saw so many different animals we almost lost count and learned so much about the animals from Africa.The talks by the Park Rangers were fascinating and gave us a lot to think about and look for as we made our way around the enclosures. Did you know that giraffe have black tongues? It helps to stop them getting sunburnt when they are eating.

As usual, the Meerkats were sooooooooooo popular - they didn't speak to us though! We all came away wishing we could have the next trip to the Masai Mara......what do you think Mrs. White?

Despite a few hiccupups on the way home (which involved the use of many plastic bags!) everyone agreed it had been an informative and magical day.
